Emergency Evacuation – Emergency Lighting

October 5, 2015 @ 9:31 am posted by

The thing we found out when we did a practice complete building evacuate was that we were missing proper traffic control people and tools, both in the building and out in the parking lot.  If it had been dark the sitauation would have been even worse.    People tend to panic in an emergency situation and proper crowd control in the building and in the parking lots is key in a total evacuation situation.

What we did was to enlist more floor captains and we supplied each floor with emergency wands and lantern flashlights.  The wands work great for directing people and cars and really what you want to get is the biggest flashlight or lanters you can find.    Get your emergency lighting before you need them.

Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Alarms

August 13, 2015 @ 12:40 pm posted by

Every year, many people lose their lives unnecessarily because of a smoke alarm or lack thereof.  They either have a smoke alarm that doesn’t work because of one of three reasons:  a)  the batteries don’t work  b) there are no batteries in the smoke detector or c) there is no smoke alarm in the house.

You need to have more than just a smoke alarm where you live.  You need to have a working smoke alarm.  Having a smoke alarm in your place of residence doesn’t do you or your family any just if it falls within one of the first two reasons above.

Having a working smoke detector can save you and your family from further danger if you have one that works.  To ensure that it works, you should test the batteries periodically (every few months).

When you get the smoke alarm, if you are not familiar with how to install it, there are instructions that come with it.  Or you can have someone more experienced to install it for you.  The important thing is to have a smoke alarm that is working properly.

In addition to having a smoke alarm, nowadays, it’s good for people to have a carbon monoxide alarm or a combination smoke and carbon monoxide alarm.  Since carbon monoxide is invisible and odorless, you won’t know something is wrong unless you have one of these alarms.

Some people may not realize how dangerous it is to ingest carbon monoxide.  The bad thing about this is that most of the time, people don’t realize it until it’s too late.

A detector that can spot a flow of carbon monoxide can help to assist those that may be in the midst of it to get out quickly.  Carbon monoxide has proven to be deadly in a lot of instances.  This alarm can help people to realize what’s going on and alert everyone else that is around you.

In fact, both the smoke and carbon monoxide alarms are good to have in your home.  You want to divert a disaster either way.  There are too many people that don’t think that this is important, but it is.

Some people don’t realize how much until it happens to or affects them with their family or someone else that they know.  So it’s important that you and your family are educated about smoke alarms as well as carbon monoxide alarms.  The time is now to get all of the emergency preparedness information you can so that you and your family will be able to save lives.

First Aid Kits and Medical First Aid Kits

August 11, 2015 @ 3:24 pm posted by

It’s always good to have a first aid kit available when someone needs it.  You never know when you may run upon someone that has scraped some part of their body, or some other minor incident or accident.

There are some people that just seem to be accident prone and can’t help themselves.  Then you have those that in spite of being careful, end up hurting themselves anyway.  Having a small first aid cabinet can help those who need to take care of a minor injury.  When you are getting a first aid kit together, you should consider what you think you will need for your family.

One thing you will probably need is band-aid strips.  Both plastic and woven ones will do the trick.  The difference is the plastic ones are thinner and the woven ones are slightly thicker.  So, it .may depend on the cut as to which ones you should use.

Or if you have someone that has slightly injured or cut their fingertip or knuckle area, you may want to have some fingertip and knuckle woven band-aid strips.  Since the injury will more than likely be minor, then these can be kept on the area for a few days.

Gauze pads can be used for larger wounds that occur on the arm, knee or leg areas.  Depending on the size of the wound or injury will determine what size gauze pads to use.  Of course, before you put on the pad, you will need to put some antibiotic on the affected area.  The antibiotic will help the affected area to heal.

Sometimes, an unknown substance can get into the eye and cause it to burn.  You will need eye wash to flush it out in addition to water.  This may have to be done several times until the person feels that their eye is ok.  Even after that, it is probably advisable that they see a physician to make sure everything is fine with their eye.

You definitely need to have a first aid book so that you can follow the instructions.  There will be different things in the first aid kit that you may not know what to do with them.  So this book will be able to help you use the right thing for the appropriate injury or minor illness.

Having a small first aid cabinet will come in handy for you and the family members that live with you.  If they are old enough, they too, need to know what’s in the first aid cabinet and should know how to utilize it.

Medical First Aid Kits and Supplies

August 2, 2015 @ 8:22 pm posted by

Medical first aid kits and supplies are indispensable in times of emergencies. This collection of supplies allows you to take immediate action against injuries that can happen anytime. And because you can never know when an emergency can happen, it is always a good idea to keep separate first aid supplies in your home, car and office. As a matter of fact, it is more prudent to have separate kits in each major section or room in your home. This way, you can always reach for medical first aid kits in a snap.

Your medical first aid kits and supplies should not be too small like a matchbox or too big like your garage. While there is no hard-and-fast rule about how big your first aid kits should be, you must make sure that your emergency medical set can contain all the essential items for first aid treatment. Also, take into consideration the weight of your first aid kit. It is better to have a lighter box than a heavier one because you will definitely need to carry it to many areas, not just inside your home, but also in other places where there is an emergency. Nevertheless, the type of container for your first aid supply can be varied according to your needs. You can use a re-sealable plastic bag or even a clean toolbox for your supplies

Medical first aid kits and supplies should be placed in good open location, meaning, your kits can be easily seen by anyone inside your home. If you have kids, make sure that they understand the importance and the uses of having first aid kits. You will never know when you will rely on your kids to respond to emergencies, especially those that involve you, so you might as well teach them early on. Furthermore, if you can not afford to have multiple first aid supplies, you can just invest on one medical first aid kit and place it somewhere in the central area of your home such that you can see it and grab it from wherever you are coming from.  Medical first aid kits and supplies basically include bandages, adhesive tapes, cotton balls, clinical gloves, anti-bacterial solutions and eye goggles too. The main components of good medical first aid kits include items that protect not just the injured but the respondent as well. Above all, make sure that your first aid supplies are of good quality.

Search and Rescue Supplies

May 25, 2015 @ 10:15 am posted by

Search and RescueWhen search and rescue is needed it is often the first responders who make the biggest impact. They are the hottest on the trail, so to speak, and having the right search and rescue supplies and tools can make all the difference in their endeavors. Community Emergency Response Team (or CERT) members are often the first people out in the field to begin the search and rescue. These CERT members know the terrain for which they are trained very well and should embark on their search and rescue operation properly supplied.

Reflective vests are a helpful part of the search and rescue supplies and tools. They are easily seen from a distance due to color and the reflective quality of the tape, trim and fabric. Other CERT members can easily locate each other. This vest is so highly visible that it is possible that the person being searched for will see the bright color and realize help is on its way. Other tools and supplies essential to a search and rescue operation include solar radios, flashlights and bullhorns. In fact, a bullhorn or megaphone that includes a siren is a great addition to any search and rescue operation as it enables the user to get a loud sound out and notify other rescuers when help is needed or the object of the search is found.

Search and rescue can make a big difference in whether it is a successful operation or and tools  Consider the conditions you are going into and how long the person you are searching for may have been missing and stranded. Rain ponchos for the CERT members and the people or person you are searching for are helpful. Solar blankets and sleeping bags in the event of a temperature drop or overnight stay are a good idea. In the unfortunate event that you find the person you are searching for and they have died, a body bag will aid you in transporting them back to civilization.

You may find that your search and rescue mission goes from day to night. Flashlights are essential to your search and rescue supplies and tools. You can also purchase a high powered rechargeable spotlight which is an amazing source of light for your rescue operation. Don’t forget to take a first aid kit or trauma kit on your search and rescue mission.
